Since 1950 the world's population has increased rapidly to a figure of 6 billion on October 12, 1999. World Mental Health Day may seem an odd event around which to base a school assembly, but it is likely that many of your students either suffer from, or have relatives who suffer from, some form of mental health problem. This can lead to isolation and bullying, and ultimately lead to a worsening of their situation and an increased likelyhood of disruptive or self-destructive behaviour. For this reason it is important that students of all ages realise that if they have problems they can get help and support, and most importantly that mental health problems need to be treated, not hidden.

Hijra, the Islamic New Year, is the first day of the month of Muharram. It marks the Hijra in 622 CE when the Prophet Muhammad moved from Mecca to Medina to establish the first Islamic state. The Hijra, or withdrawal, is the emigration of Muhammad and his followers to the city of Medina in 622. Muhammad, preaching the doctrines of one God (called Allah) and the threat of the Day of Judgment, did not at first have much success in the city of Mecca. His tribe, the Quraysh, which was in charge of the Kaaba, persecuted and harassed him continuously. He and his followers emigrated to the city of Yathrib, 320 km north of Mecca, in September 622. Yathrib was soon renamed Madinat un-Nabi, the City of the Prophet, Medina in English. The Muslim year during which the Hijra occurred was designated the first year of the Islamic calendar by Umar in 638, 17 AH (anno hegirae = "in the year of the hijra").

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was proclaimed by the UN in 1948. It outlines the human rights standards the UN believes should be enforced by all nations - among them "the right to life, liberty and nationality, to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, to work, to be educated, and to take part in government." That day in 1948 could arguably be called the birth of the modern human rights movement. With widely agreed-upon universal standards in place, "atrocities" could be more concretely labelled "violations" and could be more readily acted against. States that have embraced these standards have, for more than half a century, observed December 10th as Human Rights Day.
In the twenty-first century growing numbers of people are leaving their native countries to live in different countries. In 2000, an estimated 175 million lived outside their country of birth. Of these, about 159 million were deemed international migrants; approximately 16 million were recognised refugees fleeing a well-founded fear of persecution; and 900,000 were asylum seekers. More information about migrants can be found on the December 18 website. The Moving Here website explores, records and illustrates why people came to England over the last 200 years and what their experiences were and continue to be. It offers free access, for personal and educational use, to an online catalogue of versions of original material related to migration history from local, regional and national archives, libraries and museums.
Christmas (literally, the Mass of Christ) is a traditional holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus with both religious and secular aspects, commonly observed on 25 December by prayers, exchange of gifts, and family celebrations. Christ's birth, or nativity, was said by his followers to fulfil the prophecies of Judaism that a messiah would come, from the house of David, to redeem the world from sin.
