Children of this age have already experienced far more international travel, international news coverage and international culture than any previous generation.

They need to be able to prepare to meet the challenges that the changing world will present to them.

Young people aged 11-14 need a global dimension to the subjects and activities they encounter, so that they can:
  • recognise the diversity of national, regional, religious and ethnic identities
  • appreciate the work of community, national and international voluntary groups
  • understand that legal and human rights and responsibilities underpin the operation of society
  • see the world as a global community, where conflicts should be fairly resolved.

Class participation and expression
At this age, pupils need to be able to think about topical issues, problems and events including ICT-based sources. They should be able to justify their opinions, contribute to discussions, and have the imagination to express and explain views that are not their own.

By the age of 14-18, young people will be able to understand far more about the context of what they have learned so far. Besides the knowledge, understanding and skills listed above, they should be able to:
  • recognise the origins and implications of diversity in the UK
  • consider the opportunities for individuals and groups to bring about social change
  • understand the position of the UK in Europe, the Commonwealth and the UN
  • appreciate the wider issues and challenges of global interdependence and responsiblity.
  • recognise the importance of playing an active part in democratic and electoral processes
  • be aware of the rights and responsibilities of consumers, employees and employers

Enquiry and communication
Pupils should be taught to research a topical issue, problem or event by analysing information from different sources. In class discussions, they should be able to critically evaluate views that are not their own while still being able to think about them with some empathy.

Resource materials for lessons
If you would like to order educational materials to support teaching the global dimension (specifically development education) there is a website for this purpose. To search for useful lesson plan packs, teachers reference books, teaching aids such as maps, posters, board games etc, visit www.globaldimension.org, where you can search by age and subject through resources that have all been rated by teachers. It includes many of the materials in the Oxfam education catalogue and from a number of other accredited sources.

This section offers lesson plans both specially written for the Global Gateway, and links to other sites offering lesson plans that teachers have tried and found to be effective. Choose your lesson plans from these sections:
