Special offer for Fairtrade Fortnight

Link your school in Ghana, Trinidad or Bangladesh

A link with a school in Ghana is an opportunity to share what you know about...

...cocoa farming and the journey from Ghana to your corner shop
...urbanisation and why families move to cities if they grew up on farms
...traditional crafts such as elephant grass baskets and kente cloth

A link with Trinidad would focus on literacy and raising standards in written work...

...Poetry you could share about the experience of the early immigrants to Britain
...Resistance and rebellion - understanding more about slavery and a slave's experiences
...Harvesting one million tons of bananas - for how much of the supermarket cost?

A link with a school in Bangladesh is a way to show that you ARE bothered....

...by the unfairness of the garment industry (where did your school uniform come from and who made it?)
...about the practice of cotton farming, who makes the money and who gets into debt?
...about climate change and would like to learn more about how people 'live on water'?

What do we do next?

Please email partnerfinding@globalgateway.org with your chosen country in the subject line. We will ask you to register your school and make a statement that affirms your school wants to develop a global dimension to be embedded in the curriculum and in the ethos of the school. You can start this process at http://www.globalgateway.org/isa

To access free training to support your link (supply cover can be paid) see http://www.britishcouncil.org/globalschools-pd-workshops-intro.htm

The Global Gateway works with a range of organisations and partners to help schools committed to Fair Trade to link with partner schools in Ghana, Kenya, India or Nepal to share learning about social and economic justice for small scale producers.

Becoming a Fairtrade School

Schools register with the Fairtrade Foundation which offers structured advice and support and a process whereby your school can be recognised as a Fairtrade School.

Once you are a Fairtrade School or on your way to becoming a Fairtrade School, you can approach us about the global linking offers. Register on the site and email us with your preferences, heading your email Fair Trade.

We’re ready – what do we do next?

Please register on the Global Gateway, then email us asking for one of the above options - state that your interest is Fair trade.

Note: we will ask you to start counting your school linking work towards the DCSF International School Award. Through your commitment to becoming a Fairtrade School you are deemed to have a stated intent to incorporating a Global Dimension into your school’s ethos and learning and to be including this in School Policy Documents.
