What does Ofsted think?
The following extracts (a tiny
selection) show how this evidence is assimilated into Ofsted
reports, and the headings to which the comments relate (though
comments often appear throughout).
Overall effectiveness
............Parents praised the strong links the school
maintains with schools in The Gambia and China. These pervade the
school's day-to-day life, and give pupils a real insight into life
in other countries through their correspondence and the books they
make about the life of children here and abroad… Cultural
development is a particular strength with pupils benefiting from
the school's focus on the global dimension.
Hagley
Primary School, 2007
.............The school has again been awarded the International
School Award for excellence in this aspect...........Well-adapted
activities support enable pupils who find learning difficult to
take part in all subjects. Because pupils enjoy them so much, an
excellent range of clubs are very well attended, including sports,
drama and art clubs, brass and steel bands, and the 'Erondu'
African heritage club.
Elms Primary and Nursery, 2007
.................The international flavour of the school is
demonstrated by the high proportion of pupils who study a modern
foreign language to GCSE level… The international links are
appreciated by the pupils, as are the very good facilities for
information and communication technology. These came together when
the school represented Europe in a United Nations video link with
schools around the world.
The Ridings High School 2006
...............Personal well-being and development are
outstanding.... The school is successfully tackling a tradition of
low attainment, poor participation in further education and lack of
self-esteem.... Looking outwards to the world is part of a strategy
to raise aspirations. Numerous school trips are undertaken for
example to China, Spain, Italy, the Czech Republic and France.
Video conferencing promotes language learning and international
understanding. Consequently, students are gaining an appreciation
of the rich diversity of cultures within British society and across
the world.

Global Citizenship work……………..
Ocklynge

.................Subjects such as English, art, music, drama, RE,
citizenship and modern foreign languages make a strong contribution
to cultural awareness. The school has also cultivated substantial
international links and through these, as well as through the
curriculum, students learn to appreciate other cultures; for
example, the school has forged strong links with schools in
Thailand. Citizenship also makes a good contribution to students’
social and moral development.
The Hayesbrook School 2005
All students’ learning is enriched by a particularly wide range of
extra-curricular activities, excellent links with colleges and
partner schools, and visits to other countries, for example,
Uganda. These activities also contribute very well to the provision
for gifted and talented students and those with learning
difficulties and/or disabilities, who both do exceptionally
well.
John
Kyrle High School and Sixth Form Centre 2008
A good example of the outcome of the extensive fundraising is the
opening of a school in the Philippines and its continued financial
support. There are other equally exciting links with schools in
Africa, India and Russia. These links help students to appreciate
what they can do to give something back and help others who are
less fortunate.
Stroud
High School 2007
While you are prepared very well for examinations, the school
ensures your education goes further and promotes very positive
self-esteem and confidence, excellent personal skills and a very
broad understanding of the world around us.
Lancaster

and cultures. This strength.... greatly enhances their enjoyment
and personal development.

impressive opportunities for students to take on responsibilities
within the school and beyond it.
Oaklands

...this ethos of high expectations has a positive impact on
students, both culturally and academically. 'I'm going to China
with the school soon - I'd never even been on a plane before I came
here.'

Curriculum and other activities
.........The links with schools in several European countries
and the teaching of French and German helps to prepare pupils for
their secondary schools and the world beyond school. This
innovative curriculum is highly successful in equipping pupils
exceptionally well for their future role in society and promoting
their economic well-being.
Snaith
Primary School 2008
.....................There are outstanding after school
activities. For example, the teaching of Spanish through a link
with a school in Madrid, is one example of how learning is brought
alive for them.
Berridge
Junior School 2007
.................First class international links with European
schools provide pupils with excellent opportunities to broaden
their experiences. The teaching of Spanish and Japanese to all
pupils adds even greater depth to this outstanding curriculum.
Shaw
Wood Primary School 2006
……………..Pupils also successfully develop their confidence and
skills, learning more about life beyond their immediate
environment. Excellent links are established with schools locally
and in several other countries to prepare them well for later life
in a multi-cultural society.
Ocklynge
Junior School 2005
……………. The links with other countries are an outstanding
feature, and benefit both students and staff with insight into
international matters.
Pershore
High School 2006
........................The curriculum, fulfilling all statutory
requirements, is excellent. It meets the needs of all children
including those in the Foundation Stage. The visits by staff to
Italy and Denmark to observe excellent practice in the education of
young children vastly enriches the quality of the school’s
provision.
Trimdon
Grange Infant and Nursery 2006
.......................Pupils particularly enjoy the themed
weeks and days linked to history, art, design and technology,
poetry and an international week. They say, 'these are fun and they
give us interesting things to learn and write about'. Studies in
the local environment and about other countries enrich learning and
are supported by a good range of visits out and visitors into the
school. (Links to Enjoying And Achieving)

Leadership and management
.....................Leaders throughout the school strive
successfully to provide a good and interesting education for
pupils............ The leadership team are very good at using
available initiatives to improve the education offered to pupils,
for example, the links made with schools in India and Egypt funded
by grants from the British Council.
Ocklynge

since the last inspection, and currently has a high level of
consistency of quality across all subject departments and other
areas of its work. This is the result of a coherent approach to
strategic planning which enables a wide range of initiatives to be
pursued, all to the common end of raising achievement. The training
school partnership, the West Kent Learning Federation, the school’s
specialist status and its international links are all creatively
and imaginatively used for the benefit of students and the
improvement of their learning.
The Hayesbrook School 2005
